Chlortetracycline is broad-spectrum antibiotic active against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, Rickettsia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Spirochaetes and also some protozoa. Tetracyclines inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and preventing binding of tRNA and thus preventing formation of the protein building initiation complex. This mechanism prevents amino acids from being added to the peptide chain.
